Why Roma ancestry is different to trace

A Roma genome typically mixes three deep layers: the founding South Asian signal, the Persia/Anatolia/Caucasus passage, and the European population met along the way — all reshaped by hundreds of years of endogamy. Consumer ethnicity estimates surface all that only as a blurred average.

So instead of one number, RomanyDNA reads the story where it actually sits: founder segments that are shared across Roma carriers today, admixture dating that can be put beside the published migration waves, and chromosome-level comparisons with the community itself.

Create a free account, download your raw file from the testing company (AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, LivingDNA or FTDNA — their own help pages show how), and upload it here. Your clear first stop is the Romany report once the nightly models run, and One-to-many matches to see relatives in the community.

It is the un-consumerised marker table — every rsID, chromosome and position with your two alleles — that testing companies can download for you. We never need your actual results dashboard, only that file. The getting-started guide has exact download links.

Yes. Matching works against whoever is on the site, and the reconstruction tools build ancestors' DNA from descendants. The Roma community tools (founder segments, admixture dating, endogamy) work from your single kit.

No. Every tool and report on RomanyDNA is free; community funding pays for the servers. The site does not gate results behind a paywall.

Your kit is private by default; you control visibility per kit, per photo and per community declaration, and can delete a kit at any time. Matching happens only between kits on this site. Details in the privacy explainer.

Because every company estimates with different models and references. Different calculators give different numbers for the same DNA.
